Everything you need to know to get to Chennai, with a few practical details to make the journey easier.
Book your tickets
Book your flights to Chennai International Airport (MAA), unless you are arriving at another airport in India. Most itineraries from the US have at least one stop, often in the Gulf, Europe or Singapore. Check with your airline for the latest schedules.
Get your visa
Apply for the e-Tourist Visa on the official government website. We recommend applying at least two weeks in advance to allow for buffer time, even though it is usually processed in 3-5 business days.
After you land, you will pass immigration, collect your bags and clear customs. From there, you can take an Uber (or Ola), a prepaid taxi or the Metro to your hotel. Allow about 1 to 2.5 hours from touchdown to reaching the car, depending on arrival traffic and airport queues.
